FINANCIAL LITERACY PATHWAYS

Program Overview

The Financial Literacy Pathways Program is TEDI’s program to equip young people with practical money management skills that they can carry throughout their lives. The program focuses on budgeting, saving, responsible borrowing, entrepreneurship, and understanding financial systems, ensuring that youth are empowered to make informed financial decisions.

Through workshops, mentorship, and interactive learning, the program instills not only technical knowledge but also confidence in managing personal and business finances. By doing so, TEDI supports the development of a generation that is financially resilient, economically independent, and able to contribute to Tanzania’s sustainable development goals.

The Problem

Across Tanzania, many young people leave school without the knowledge or confidence to manage their finances effectively. Studies show that less than 40% of Tanzanians are financially literate, and only about 17% of youth report having access to formal financial services. Without these critical skills, young people are more vulnerable to poverty cycles, unemployment, and risky financial behaviors.

Our Solution

Akili Akiba (Smart Saving Project)

Many young people in Tanzania lack the financial literacy skills necessary to manage their money effectively, leading to poor saving habits, financial insecurity, and limited economic opportunities. Without a strong foundation in financial management, youth struggle to make
informed financial decisions, hindering their long-term financial stability and growth.

The Akili Akiba Project addresses this challenge by equipping young people with essential financial skills, including budgeting, saving, investing, and responsible financial decision-making. Through structured training sessions, the program helps participants develop
a smart and sustainable approach to managing their finances.

Key Features of the Akili Akiba Project

  • Fundamental Financial Skills: Training on budgeting, saving, and financial planning through school clubs.
  • Investment & Entrepreneurship Training: Guidance on smart investment decisions and managing small businesses.
  • Interactive Learning: Engaging workshops, real-life financial simulations, and peer discussions.
  • Practical Application: Encouraging participants to implement savings plans and track financial progress.

Achievements So Far

Since launch, TEDI has already reached 250+ youth with financial literacy skills, helping them to better plan their futures and make sound financial choices. Looking ahead, the program aims to scale nationally, creating a culture of financial responsibility and empowerment for Tanzanian youth.

TEDI is committed to fostering a financially literate generation capable of making informed financial decisions that contribute to their economic independence. Over the next five years, we aim to reach 5,000 youths, empowering them to build sustainable financial futures and contribute to Tanzania’s economic growth.
