TEACH TECH
Program Overview
The Teach Tech Program is TEDI’s flagship initiative to strengthen the capacity of ICT teachers in Tanzanian public schools, ensuring that students don’t just learn about technology but experience it in meaningful, practical ways. In many schools, computer labs—where they exist—remain underutilized because teachers lack the confidence or skills to integrate ICT into everyday learning. By equipping teachers with digital literacy, e-learning tools, and innovative pedagogy, the project transforms classrooms into interactive, student-centered environments where young people engage actively with technology rather than passively consuming information.
The Problem
In the 21st century, education systems are increasingly integrating technology into teaching and learning. However, Tanzania faces a critical shortage of teachers skilled in digital pedagogy, which undermines the country’s ability to keep pace with these changes.
Infrastructure without skills
Even where computer labs exist, many teachers lack the ability to use them effectively, leading to underutilized resources.
National shortage
A 2016 study by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training revealed that Tanzania had only 95 qualified ICT teachers, while 262 were needed in secondary schools. The gap is even wider in primary schools, where ICT is rarely introduced.
Student disadvantage
With only 34% of Tanzanians digitally literate, and ICT education in schools often taught only in theory, many young people leave school unprepared for higher education or the modern workforce.
21st-century urgency
By 2030, 9 out of 10 jobs will require digital skills. Without building strong digital foundations in schools, Tanzanian youth risk being excluded from opportunities in education, employment, and innovation.
Policy context
Tanzania’s Draft National Digital Education Strategy (2024–2030) identifies ICT integration as a national priority to improve education quality and equip learners with 21st-century skills. Yet without empowered teachers, this strategy cannot be realized effectively.
Our Solution
The Teach Tech Program empowers teachers to become digital leaders and multipliers of impact by:

- Training ICT teachers from public schools in digital literacy, e-learning platforms, and internet safety, ensuring they can teach with confidence.
- Providing teachers with digital devices such as laptops, projectors, and tablets to support lesson delivery and ensure classrooms are fully equipped for modern teaching.
- Facilitating peer networks and ICT clubs where teachers exchange knowledge, innovations, and strategies for continuous professional growth.
- Building sustainability by empowering teachers not only to teach digital skills but also to mentor fellow educators and inspire students across subjects.
By focusing on teachers as catalysts, TEDI ensures that every investment in digital education has exponential impact—one teacher trained and equipped can transform the learning outcomes of hundreds of students each year.
Our Achievements So Far
- Trained 40 ICT teachers from 40 public schools in Dar es Salaam (Temeke and Kinondoni Districts).
- Provided digital tools (laptops, projectors, and tablets) to ICT teachers from 7 public schools in Kinondoni District, strengthening their ability to integrate technology into everyday teaching.
- Introduced digital pedagogy practices that have already improved the interactivity of classrooms and student engagement.
- Established ICT teacher networks to promote continuous professional development and peer support.
- Increased teacher confidence in using technology, directly benefiting thousands of students who now access modern, interactive learning.
